It is unlikely that so much trouble would be gone to for a petty thief or a common robber. Roman thought involved the need to put any rebels to death publicly and painfully:

Jesus was in all likelihood seen by Rome as a rebel against its authority. Whether he actively portrayed himself as such is another question and another essay. We know only that Jesus was a remarkable man who died a remarkable death, and that his story will last another millenium.
